Ages 5-6 | Phase 5

Exploring alternative spellings and pronunciations, building fluency in reading and writing.

What is Phase 5?

In Phase 5, children build on their existing phonics knowledge by learning alternative spellings and pronunciations. They discover that the same sound can be represented by different letters, such as /ai/ in rain and /ay/ in play, and that some letters can make different sounds, such as /ea/ in sea and bread.

Children continue developing their blending and segmenting skills to read and spell increasingly complex words. They also learn new tricky words and practise reading sentences and longer texts, building fluency and confidence in reading and writing.
