Phase 2

Ages 4-5 | Autumn Term

Developing early reading skills by learning alphabet sounds, early digraphs and blending simple words

What is Phase 2?

In Phase 2, children begin learning alphabet sounds and early digraphs, recognising letters and identifying sounds in words. They develop their reading skills by breaking words down into individual sounds and blending them together. Children are also introduced to tricky words that cannot yet be fully decoded. These skills help children begin reading and writing simple words.
