Phase 3

Ages 4-5 | Spring Term

Learning digraphs and trigraphs, blending longer words and building confidence in reading and writing

What is Phase 3?

In Phase 3, children learn new digraphs and trigraphs, where two or three letters work together to represent one sound, such as /ai/ in rain and /igh/ in night. They continue developing their blending and segmenting skills to read and spell words using these new sounds.

Children also learn additional tricky words and begin reading longer words and simple sentences, building confidence and fluency in their early reading and writing.
